Maki Rolls

We decided to learn a bit about Japan today. We’ve wanted to make sushi for ages so we went to the shops to get some sushi rice and special seaweed that goes around the sushi rolls.

Once we’d been to the shops we thought about what our restaurant, The Wooden Spoon, would be called in Japanese. We found out what it was and spent some time learning how to write the name.

We had to do lots of things to make the sushi. Firstly we found a video that showed how to make maki rolls.

Once we’d watched that and learnt what to do we decided to sharpen our knife. You need a sharp knife to cut up sushi.

Then we washed the rice. Japanese people like to wash sushi rice so that’s what we did.

We cooked our rice and mixed in some vinegar, sugar and salt before spreading the rice on our special seaweed, which is called nori. We wanted to put cucumber (which we found out is called Kappa) and salmon in our maki rolls.

We rolled the seaweed, rice and filling in a special bamboo mat to make it into a long sausage shape.

Then we cut the sausage into little pieces and arranged them on a plate.

We ate a bit too much and then, after, we watched some videos of Sumo wrestlers:
